Manipur government denies authorization to Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra rally

On January 10, 2024, the Manipur Government refused the Congress’ request to start the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Imphal’s Palace Ground.

Rahul Gandhi, the party’s leader, was scheduled to lead the Yatra, which was scheduled to begin on January 14 in Imphal and end in Mumbai on March 20.

K.C. Venugopal, general secretary of the Congress organization, confirmed the news, saying, “This morning, we have learned that the Manipur Government has declined permission to start the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from the Palace Ground at Imphal.” While we are searching for a different location, we will begin in Imphal.
The Manipur government has authorized the flag-raising ceremony at Palace Ground, but not the demonstration, according to Congress sources who spoke with The Hindu.
Keisham Megachandra, the head of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, called the state government’s decision “unfortunate” and a “violation of people’s rights.”

the leader of the rally, Mr. Megachandra, “We met with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and requested permission to use Hatta Kangjeibung in the Imphal East district as the rally’s starting point. The chief minister has refused to allow the same, though. Mr. Singh was greeted by a Congress delegation at the CM Secretariat.

The state government has not yet responded.

Speaking at a news conference in Guwahati earlier on Tuesday, Mr. Venugopal stated that Manipur has been selected to lead the march in order to “heal the wounds” of its citizens who have been impacted by the ethnic violence.

The Congress asked for permission to start the march in the Imphal East district near Hatta Kangjeibung. Before ending in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the yatra passes through portions of Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

The program is scheduled to be started by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge in front of chief ministers from States where the party is in power as well as other party officials.
